Antonio Pierce of the Las Vegas Raiders comments on the poor running game in the loss to the Panthers

The Las Vegas Raiders suffered a shocking 36-22 loss to the winless Carolina Panthers in their home opener, dropping to 1-2 on the year.

After an impressive Week 2 win over Baltimore, Pierce was very frustrated with the offensive performance against the Panthers, which only managed 55 rushing yards on 16 attempts. The Raiders have yet to rush for 100 yards this season and have been unable to sustain a rushing attack.

“The scheme wasn't good enough, the plays weren't good enough today,” Pierce said after the game. “What we thought would work didn't work, and we didn't execute on the field and didn't show the effort that we had shown in previous games.”

Running back Zamir White managed just 34 yards on 10 carries, and a total of just 58 yards on 19 carries in the last two games.

Failing to establish a run all day, the Raiders continually struggled with long downs and yardage, resulting in several drives that resulted in zero points. A couple of late drives in garbage time made the score look much closer than it actually was.

“I mean just first and 10th, next try is probably second and eighth, second and ninth, so most of the time, if you can't win on the early tries, teams are just going to keep going at us and bring out their full arsenal of options on the third try and that's really what you see,” Pierce said. “So until we get better, either running the ball, being more productive, making some positive plays on the first and second try, it's not going to be good, but we've got to work on it, you know, it's a long season, it's week three, we're going to go to the lab and we've got to work really hard tomorrow.”

On a positive note, wide receiver Tre Tucker had a career-high seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown in his sophomore year. Backup quarterback Aidan O'Connell entered the game late and showed promise with 82 passing yards and a touchdown.
