Apparently, for some puzzling reason, the officials missed the call to re-inspect the Seahawks' fumble

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was a good challenge. It's not his fault the reps missed the call.

In the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game, it appeared a punt hit Seattle Seahawks punt returner Dee Williams, and the 49ers rallied significantly. It was Seahawks ball on the field, so Shanahan threw the red flag.

In the replay, it's pretty clear that the ball hit Williams' finger. Officials said the call on the field stood and it was still the Seahawks' ball.

On the Amazon Prime Video broadcast, rules analyst Terry McAulay said two replay angles showed it hit Williams and it should have been the 49ers ball. Announcers Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit agreed.

“Seattle is taking a break,” Herbstreit said.

Later in the broadcast, McAulay came back and offered a startling explanation for why the decision may not have been reversed: The NFL, which makes more than $20 billion annually, did not have access to the same extended replay material as that which is currently available on Amazon Prime Video broadcast. Seriously.

“I spoke to Walt Anderson at the command center in New York,” McAulay said on the broadcast. “What they tell me, they didn't get our extended video where we showed the ball hitting the finger. What they had was the raw image from our cameras and it was not clear and obvious to them that he touched the finger.” “

Instead of the 49ers having the ball deep in Seahawks territory after a turnover, the Seahawks retained possession. The 49ers then forced a punt, but should have been within field goal range with the loss of the ball.

Not much can upset a coach more than questioning a decision, being right, and still not getting the result you want. Shanahan made the right decision Thursday night to challenge the decision on the field. Ultimately, the officers did something wrong. Maybe the NFL should try to improve the quality of its reps.
