Auburn NFL recap: Darius Slayton replaces Malik Nabers on the Giants

Four games into his NFL career, New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers led the league with 35 receptions, good for 386 yards and three touchdowns. But a concussion caused him to miss Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Giants needed someone to step in for the prized rookie to avoid slipping to 1-4. It turned out to be Darius Slayton.

The former Auburn wide receiver entered the 2024 season with 122 yards on 10 receptions. In New York's 29-20 victory over Seattle, Slayton had eight receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown, recording the sixth 100-yard receiving game of his career.

“We moved Slayton to where Nabers was a bunch,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said, “and he was usually on the other side, so now he has to learn the whole thing — not learn because he's been with us since our time is.” here, and one of the reasons is that he is very reliable and smart. So when you hear a personnel group from training camp and all that, you go into this position and all of a sudden you have to turn around and go into this position – but that's Slay. He's a great teammate and always did what we asked of him. I've said that many times. I’m happy for him.”

Slayton caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Jones as New York took a 17-10 lead with 10:41 left in the third quarter. The touchdown was Slayton's first of the season and the 20th of his career.

“To me, it’s basically the opposite,” Slayton said of Sunday’s changes. “Where I’m used to, I go the other way. I just try to do my best to remember that. I definitely went the wrong way once or twice. I got it together. I was able to do well today.”

Slayton began the touchdown drive with the Giants' longest play – a 41-yard reception. But he received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and lost 15 yards.

Slayton was among 17 former Auburn players who took the field on the fifth Sunday of the 105th NFL season.

Two other former Auburn players were involved in the New York-Seattle game:

· Derick Hall started at outside linebacker for the Seahawks. Hall made six tackles, recorded a sack, registered two quarterback hits and forced a fumble.

· Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson) made a tackle and broke up a pass.
