With the F1 United States Grand Prix, a major UT football game, an Austin FC soccer game and other events happening across the metropolis, driving in the Texas capital could prove particularly difficult this weekend.

If Austin becomes the place to be, it could also become the place to avoid driving. Which streets will be closed and which areas should be avoided?

Events in Austin this weekend

So much to do, so little time! Austin will host several sporting events this weekend, including an international racing event. And as the heat temporarily subsides, more people are likely to join in the outdoor festivities.

Events taking place in Austin this weekend include:

  • Friday-Sunday: F1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas
  • Saturday, 6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m: Texas vs. Georgia football game at Royal Memorial Stadium
  • Saturday, 8 p.m: Austin FC vs. Colorado Rapids soccer game at Q2 Stadium
  • Sunday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m: Livestrong Challenge and 5K/10K bike and run events in the downtown/Lady Bird Lake area

Road closure maps for Austin this weekend

This weekend's events will result in the following road closures, Austin Mobility News reports:

Formula 1 United States Grand Prix

According to Austin Mobility News, visitors to the F1 race at Circuit of the Americas have several options to get there. You can take a shuttle from Waterloo Park downtown or the Travis County Exposition Center in East Austin, or purchase a parking pass to drive. The shuttles will impact traffic in the Waterloo Park area.

Ride services such as Uber and Lyft will operate from the racetrack's McAngus parking lot, and a free tram will take participants from McAngus to the racetrack's Grand Plaza. Ride-hailing vehicles are not permitted on COTA Boulevard.

Unless otherwise noted, expect delays and road closures in the downtown area near Waterloo Park from 5:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. daily through Sunday:

  • Parking on East 15th Street: Garage access only, both directions.
  • Parking on Red River Street: Garage access only, southbound lane of Red River Street from garage access to East 15th Street and to
  • Southbound lane of Red River Street: Closed from garage access to East 12th Street.
  • Trinity Street: Lane reduction, cross traffic lanes will be open from East 10th Street to East 15th Street from 5:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday (There will be no F1 shuttle on Saturday.)
  • East 12th Street (Pick up/drop off by driver): Parking lanes between Trinity Street and Red River Street are closed.
  • East 12th Street (Micromobility Park): The parking lanes between Trinity Street and Red River Street are closed.
  • East 10th Street: Lane reduction, cross traffic lanes will open from East 11th Street to East 13th Street.

Texas Longhorns vs. Georgia Bulldogs

The UT football game this weekend is a big game and is expected to draw a large crowd. Traffic around the Royal Memorial Stadium will be severely congested, so alternative transport options are recommended. Several streets in the area will be completely or partially closed on Saturday morning.

  • San Jacinto Boulevard NO through traffic from East Dean Keeton Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
  • Robert Dedman Drive No THROUGH TRAFFIC from East Dean Keeton Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
  • Red River Street CLOSED at the discretion of police from East Dean Keeton Street to Clyde Littlefield Drive.
  • Interstate 35, southbound exit, ramp CLOSED at Manor Road until the end of the game.
  • I-35, northbound exit, ramp CLOSED at Manor Road until the end of the game.
  • Eastbound West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard CLOSED from Guadalupe Street to I-35 after the game.
  • Westbound East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard CLOSED from I-35 to Trinity Street until the end of the game.
  • Eastbound East 18th Street CLOSED from San Jacinto Boulevard to Trinity Street after kickoff.
  • San Jacinto Boulevard CLOSED from East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to West 15th Street after kickoff.
  • East 17th Street CLOSED for Texas Tailgarten around Scholz Garten from San Jacinto Boulevard to Trinity Street, 7 a.m. until kickoff.
  • Trinity Street CLOSED, lane closures vary from West 15th Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after kickoff.
  • Red River Street CLOSED, lane closures vary from the Medical Center to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after kickoff.

Austin FC vs. Colorado Rapids

Due to limited parking at Q2 Stadium for the final football game of the season, fans are encouraged to try public transportation and rideshare options for Saturday's game.

Livestrong Challenge, 5km/10km

Several streets will be closed at various times Saturday through Sunday evening for the Livestrong Challenge and 5K/10K race. Cyclists will take off downtown for the Livestrong Challenge, while runners and walkers will take part in a 5K or 10K run around Lady Bird Lake. Closing times vary.

  • Lake Austin Boulevard access to Cesar Chavez Street CLOSEDSunday 6 a.m. to 11 a.m
  • MoPac boulevard (Loop 1) North and south access to Cesar Chavez Street CLOSEDSunday 6 a.m. to 11 a.m
  • Cesar Chavez Street CLOSED from MoPac Boulevard to Lavaca Street, Sunday 6-11 a.m
  • The southbound lanes of South First Street are CLOSED from Cesar Chavez Street to West Riverside Drive, Sundays from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m
  • West Riverside Drive CLOSED from Lee Barton Drive to South First Street 8:00 p.m. Saturday to 6:00 p.m. Sunday
