Awarding grades for Notre Dame football after the clear victory over Stanford

The Irish (5-1) led the visitors 7-0, marking the fifth time in six games that Notre Dame had trailed at some point in the first half, but the struggling Cardinal (2-4) program lacked the clout to achieve this Support this early statement.

Riley Leonard rushed for a point and passed for two more to build a 21-7 halftime lead, but the Notre Dame quarterback was fortunate that Stanford's defense turned back two sure interceptions. Defensive penalties negated interceptions by Benjamin Morrison and Xavier Watts, and Stanford became the third opponent in the last five games to score in its opening series against the Irish.

Special teams: B-plus

Zac Yoakam (placekicks) and Eric Goins (kickoffs) smartly stepped in after Mitch Jeter, a South Carolina graduate, had to exit after the first quarter. Freshman defensive end Bryce Young narrowly missed a punt block in the second quarter.

Coaching: A-minus

Determined not to miss a second home game after sitting back and watching Upset Saturday unfold during the bye week, Marcus Freeman improved to 11-2 in real home games since the shock loss to Stanford in 2022. Time management turned in the Irish's favor as Stanford ran out of time at plus-33 to end the first half.

Overall: A-minus

The Legends Trophy remains at the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, and now back-to-back games take place in fancy NFL venues against Georgia Tech and Navy in the next two weeks. The Irish improved to 4-0 in the Freeman era after the bye.
