This story has been updated with new information.

Iowa football entered the start of the second quarter against Northwestern with a new man under center.

Hawkeyes backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan came into the game replacing starter Cade McNamara after McNamara threw a pick-six to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead.

McNamara had completed just 8 of 13 passes for 82 yards and led the Hawkeyes near the goal line on the team's first drive before settling for a field goal.

Sullivan's first drive ended with a three-and-out after he rushed for 3 yards and completed his only pass attempt for 2 yards. His second drive ended similarly with a punt on 4th-and-2, and his third drive also failed to yield a first down after a third-down drop.

Iowa's final drive of the half finally produced some results, as after a few runs and completions from Sullivan, running back Kaleb Johnson scored a spectacular run.

The Big Ten Network said the plan is for Sullivan to get a drive in the first half, so we'll have to wait and see how much Sullivan plays going forward. Speaking to Big Ten Network at the end of the first half, coach Kirk Ferentz gave no indication of who would start at QB in the second half.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Ferentz said. “We’ll talk about it at halftime.”

Sullivan's first half stats: 4 of 6, 20 yards, no TDs or INTs. Five runs for 27 yards.
