Bicyclist, 56, dies in hit-and-run on Larkin Avenue in Joliet

JOLIET — A man bicycling on one of Joliet's busiest streets in the middle of the night was killed, and the motorist who hit him drove away before authorities arrived on scene to provide medical care to the dying cyclist to provide assistance. Will County Coroner Laurie Summers has identified the dead cyclist as Donald Shiner of Joliet.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English's news release Sunday, officers responded to the 200 block of South Larkin Avenue at 2:47 a.m. for a report of a hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist.

Officers discovered a motionless 56-year-old man lying next to a bicycle in the southbound lanes of South Larkin Avenue. The victim was spotted by an innocent passing motorist who called 911.

The initial investigation revealed that the male cyclist was hit by an unknown vehicle and then fled. Joliet Fire Department paramedics transported the cyclist to Ascension St Joseph Medical Center, where he died.

As of Sunday afternoon, the suspect vehicle had not been located, English said. Anyone with video footage or information about the crash is asked to contact the Joliet Police Department Traffic Unit at 815-724-3110.
