New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo played with a heavy heart.

Amid the champagne-soaked celebrations in the clubhouse after the Mets' stunning 4-2 comeback win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, Nimmo told reporters that he learned his grandmother had died about an hour before the game began.

“What puts it into perspective is that you can’t take any of it with you when you’re gone,” Nimmo said. “And moments like that, experiences like that – that’s what life is about.”

Nimmo said he hadn't told anyone on the team and that his grandmother had gone to the hospital the day before.

Nimmo had a game-tying hit in the Mets' ninth-inning rally, setting up Pete Alonso's go-ahead three-run home run that gave New York its first postseason series win since 2015.

“She and my grandpa watched every game,” Nimmo said, noting he was lucky enough to have his grandmother visit recently.

“To score four runs in the ninth inning and come back, I know she would have liked that and cheered us on,” Nimmo said, according to the New York Post.

Nimmo, 31, was the Mets' first-round pick in 2011 and signed an eight-year, $162 million contract with the team after the 2022 season.

New York will face the Philadelphia Phillies in the best-of-five National League Division Series starting Saturday.
