Brewers provide updates on Sal Frelick and Bryan Hudson ahead of playoffs

This story has been updated to add new information.

Sal Frelick's status for the Milwaukee Brewers' wild-card series remains uncertain 24 hours before the playoffs begin.

Frelick, who suffered a bone bruise in his left hip Friday when he hit the wall in right field foul territory, continues to limp.

The Brewers gave him a series of tests Monday afternoon during their practice at American Family Field, but he needs to make progress before Game 1 on Tuesday.

Frelick ran on the outfield warning track and then on the bases during practice, gaining decent speed without any significant steps, but was clearly affected by the bruise when he had to slow down and in his gait as he walked.

He told the Brewers' training staff he can play.

“I told them I was good to go,” Frelick said. “I’ll be ready to go tomorrow. At this point it's not up to me. They watched me closely to see how well I could move. It's up to you. I’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

When asked how much pain he was in while running, Frelick simply replied, “I should be good to go tomorrow.”

It's no surprise that Frelick, a former hockey player, will look to get involved.

“We all know who Sal is and his strength,” Murphy said. “He’s still limping. I'm not as optimistic as I had hoped. That's all I can tell you for now. We will try to put him through a series of exercises.”

Frelick also took some swings on Monday, but hitting isn't as big of an issue as running at this point.

Since the Brewers did not place Frelick on the injured list, he could still be added to the roster for the next series if the team advances. Or they might decide to cast him in the wildcard round, hoping he can heal enough in time to be used in a smaller role.

Bryan Hudson's status

Replacements Bryan Hudson, Elvis Peguero and Rob Zastryzny flew in to help the Brewers make decisions on the wild-card roster.

Of the three, Hudson's status is the biggest question mark. Hudson, one of the team's most valuable pitchers over the past five months, was elevated to Class AAA in what the Brewers called a “breather” in hopes of limiting his workload and returning him to his previous form in terms of speed and velocity to return to the hill to let movement.

“I think it’s just been a long season,” Hudson told reporters on Tuesday. “The body isn’t used to throwing so many innings at the pace I threw them.

As for his stuff, Hudson hinted that he feels like he's back on track.

“I think it’s back to where it needs to be,” he said. “Velo was a little behind on everything. We worked on some things (in Nashville) and got back on track. Ready to start.”

The 27-year-old left-hander, who had a 1.73 ERA in 62⅓ innings for Milwaukee before being dropped, still has unclear status for the wild-card series. Murphy stated that a decision on Hudson has not yet been made and that it may depend on which team the Brewers face, namely the New York Mets and the Arizona Diamondbacks, which Hudson later reiterated.

Hudson initially did not take the news of his demotion to the minors seriously and there were at least some members of the bullpen who felt he should never have been demoted. But Hudson made it clear Monday that he has gotten over the initial disappointment and is ready to pitch.

“It’s one of those things about being a younger guy,” Hudson said. “You take it with a grain of salt and move on. There's not much I can control. Control what I can control when it comes to baseball and these cards just get dealt, right? It’s not the best situation, but you go through it.”

“Keep going and keep supporting the boys. I watched every game from Triple-A on up and felt like I was there with them. You just go through it and then get rid of it. Don't try to think about it or “I sit on it too much.” It stinks, but it's over now.
