The WNBA playoffs have just begun, but the league is already honoring its players with end-of-season awards. Over the weekend, the Associated Press announced a major award—Most Valuable Player—and more will follow during the postseason.

The MVP is a big name and she's making history by winning the title for the third time. Here's who it is and how it all works.

Who is the WNBA MVP in 2024?

A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces won the unanimous title of WNBA Player of the Year, snatching the same honor from the Related press. She is the first player to be unanimously voted Kia WNBA MVP since Cynthia Cooper of the Houston Comets won the title in the league's inaugural season in 1997.

This is the third time A'ja has won the WNBA MVP Award (she also won it in 2020 and 2022). She is the fourth WNBA player to win three MVP awards, joining WNBA greats Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson in receiving the honor.

Yes, Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark was named AP's Rookie of the Year. (The WNBA has not yet announced its Rookie of the Year pick.)

How do the WNBA awards work?

The WNBA season awards are voted on by 68 media members representing the 12 WNBA markets, as well as national media, according to ESPN. These awards also include Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and All-WNBA First Team.
