Cal Poly track and field athlete Shelby Daniele has died

Former Cal Poly standout track athlete Shelby Daniele has died, according to Cal Poly Athletics. A cause of death was not given.

Daniele earned her bachelor's degree in agriculture in spring 2023 and continued her education at Cal Poly, where she earned her master's degree in agriculture this spring.

As a five-year athlete at Cal Poly, Daniele broke program records and excelled throughout her career.

The sprinter holds the school record in the women's 200-meter indoor dash (24.69), second place in the women's 60-meter indoor dash (7.62) and second place in the women's 100-meter dash (11. 59).

A six-time All-Big West honoree and two-time Big West champion, Daniele finished second in the 200, helping the Mustang women win their second conference title at the 2024 Big West Track and Field Championships.

Daniele also received many awards during her high school career. She won the 2019 CIF State Championship in the 200 m for Buchanan High School in Clovis, California with a time of 23.73 seconds. She also won Tri-River Athletic Conference (24.18) and Central Section (24.36) championships.

The Buchanan High School track and field team paid their respects to Daniele in a Facebook post.

“Shelby was an amazing athlete and went to Cal Poly to continue breaking track and field records, but her teammates and coaches will remember her as an even more amazing person. As coaches, we will always appreciate her taking the time to stop by the track and say hello to everyone upon her return to town. This loss leaves a huge hole in so many hearts, and we will never forget the amazing woman that Shelby was.”

Cal Poly Track and Field/Cross Country also mourned Daniele's death in an Instagram post.

“She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart and was a role model to so many.”
