Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh says a heart condition led to a brief exit against the Broncos

Former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh briefly left the Los Angeles Chargers' game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday and revealed why after his team's 23-16 win.

The Chargers' first-year head coach said his exit was due to a flare-up of a cardiac arrhythmia. Shortly before kickoff at Mile High Stadium in Denver, the 60-year-old was seen entering the blue medical tent on the sideline, where he was examined by the Chargers' medical staff. He was then escorted to the locker room by medical staff at the start of the first quarter before returning to the sideline with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

“Everything was fine,” Harbaugh said. “I've been struggling with this – it's called atrial flutter – and I went into an episode of it today. The doctors examined me and my rhythm returned to normal, so I came back.

Harbaugh said he underwent an electrocardiogram, which showed his heart had returned “back to sinus rhythm.”

This wasn't the first time Harbaugh experienced an atrial flutter episode during a game. He cited two other incidents — in 1999 as a player and in 2012 as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’ll always remember 2012,” Harbaugh said. “It was during the game on Monday night. Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers against the Chicago Bears, and Colin had a great night that night. … After the game I was checked out. I ended up having to undergo an ablation because it didn’t get back into rhythm, it was 2-0 with cardiac arrhythmia.”

During Harbaugh's brief absence, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who held the same position under Harbaugh the last two seasons at Michigan, served as interim head coach.

“Trust the doctors,” Harbaugh said. “It's the heart, so you take it seriously, right? Trust the doctors.”

The Chargers improved to 3-2 and are back on the road next Monday against the Arizona Cardinals.
