Chicago Bears' Caleb Williams continues to improve as he beats Los Angeles Rams

Chicago Bears quarterback and former USC Trojans star Caleb Williams has more expectations and pressure than any other young player in the National Football League. The Bears' rookie got off to a rocky start early in his career, but the flashes of performance were enough to keep everyone optimistic.

Chicago's defense has been a saving grace and has been incredibly consistent in keeping them in ball games, but the offense hasn't yet been able to match that consistency and has certainly been lacking in scoring.

Part of this can be attributed to Williams' rookie issues, but the play-calling and offensive line play were, to put it mildly, subpar. The receiving corps wasn't bad, but the lack of communication and chemistry on offside throws was concerning.

Against a 1-2 Rams team marred by injuries on both sides of the ball, Williams and the offense were expected to take a leap and make, if minimal, progress. The Bears' offense did just that and contributed to the 24-18 home win over the Rams.

“I think we just agree, and I think that started with communication throughout the week. We talk about the flow of a game and when we get into a rhythm we let it go,” Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron said.

Williams didn't have the most impressive stat line or the most impressive performance against the Rams' defense. There were two plays before halftime where he missed wide receivers DJ Moore and Rome Odunze on passes that would have resulted in touchdowns. Williams was also sacked three times, but truth be told, two of them were at his expense.

Holding the ball and creating plays off-script is a strength of Williams and his style of play, but the ability to know when to use those skills and understand the situation has been discussed ad nauseum. These glitches need to be fixed in the future. There is no way around it.

Despite these mistakes, Williams showed poise and toughness beyond his years as the game progressed. One thing Williams has been doing every week is continuing to build his core knowledge. He rarely makes the same mistakes repeatedly. Even if he stays on track, these split-second decisions will become easier over time and will become second nature as he gets older.

Williams finished the game completing 17 of 23 passes for 157 yards and a beautiful touchdown pass to DJ Moore. The passer rating of 106.6 is pretty impressive, but the numbers aren't the truth. The fact that the crucial mistake never happened shows an improvement. The game-winning turnover never occurred and Williams didn't try to don the Superman cape.

Today another small step was taken and that's all you can ask for now. If performances like this can make a difference for him, Williams and the Chicago Bears are poised for tremendous achievement in the future.
