Chris Bumstead on his retirement from the 2024 Olympics

The five-time champion remained reserved when asked about his retirement plans at the 2024 Olympic press conference.

Chris Bumstead is the talk of the town – at least in Las Vegas. The 2024 Olympics will take place in Sin City Oct. 10 to 13is the largest and most prestigious competition in bodybuilding. It is also the site of “CBum’s” expected sixth Classic Physique title.

  • Bumstead, who first won in 2019 and every year since, is the most famous active bodybuilder in the world.
  • As the 2024 Olympics approached, rumors began circulating that Bumstead would announce his retirement during or shortly after the big day.

Bumstead was asked directly about his career plans after the Olympics during the event's press conference on Thursday, October 10th. He kind of dodged the question.

Bumstead puffed out his chest as he looked at the presser while sitting with the leading men of the Classic Physique and Open divisions, including current Mr. Olympia Derek Lunsford.

  • “I'm not sure they even believe it,” Bumstead joked when asked if he believed his competitors' declarations about winning his Olympic title. “Every year it was someone different, but in my eyes they are all fighting for second place.”

But what was most telling for fans of the five-time champion was the question about his post-Olympic prospects. Olympic host Bob Cicherillo asked Bumstead a specific question about his possible retirement:

  • Cicherillo: “The rumor mill is churning… if you win the title this weekend, is that it?”
  • Bumstead: “I think since 2020 I’ve been telling people I’ve got one more in me. I won last year and I have to work hard to win again this year. That’s all I’m focused on.”

Bumstead added that he feels like he has “more in him if he wants it.” but did not provide any further details.

Bigger than bodybuilding

Since his emergence as the face of the most exciting new division in bodybuildingBumstead has evolved into more than just a professional physical athlete. With nearly 25 million followers on Instagram alone, Bumstead's fame is doing a lot to boost the sport as a whole.

However, the champion has repeatedly hinted that his days as an Olympian – unlike many of his peers, Bumstead only competes once a year – may be coming to an end.

  • Bumstead and his partner Courtney King welcomed their first child, Bradley, in April.
  • In September, Bumstead announced a significant move into entrepreneurship by taking a partial stake in sportswear brand Gymshark.
  • Bumstead runs his own gym, RAW Athletic Club, as well as a nutritional supplement and meal prep line.
