New York Yankees pitchers Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver have more than just a team in common. They both love God and find their identity in Him, not in baseball.

Weaver replaced Holmes as goalkeeper, but that didn't completely take Holmes out of the game. Now Holmes serves as the Yankees' setup man.

When asked about his new role, Holmes reiterated that he is rooted in something bigger than baseball.

“My confidence, my identity, who I am and what I can do is not really tied to any title that is given to me,” Holmes told MLB.com. “Obviously it's an honor and a great thing, but knowing who I am, knowing what I'm capable of and the pitcher that I can be – the person that I am – those things haven't been stripped away.”

“I knew what I had to do to be successful and to help this team be as successful as possible,” he added. “For me it was just a matter of focusing on those things again and doing my best again. When I'm at my best, my sinker is really good. I made it my mission to figure this out and start throwing more. It’s here and I’m starting to have success with it again.”

Weaver is no stranger to difficulties. It is these difficulties that lead him to the Lord.

“I’m in the middle of my fight and I’m praying hard,” Weaver said on the Sports Spectrum Podcast. “I'm talking about Paul and this thorn in his side in 2 Corinthians 12:10, and he resists the attempt to tell it about himself. And he just says, 'Okay, you brought this thorn here for a reason and you're allowing me to know your power.'”

As for Weaver and Holmes' relationship, the two remain friends and lean on each other.

“Clay is, first and foremost, one of the better guys I’ve ever been around. This guy cares a lot,” Weaver said of his counterpart. “He has the ability to make things happen faster than most, definitely better than me.” That doesn't mean he doesn't care, but he has the ability to be consistent as a person, come back the next day and do that To have ball.”
