It's “Nipp at noon” as Cincinnati Bearcats football returns to Nippert Stadium for the first time in nearly a month to host their homecoming game against Arizona State. This will be the Bearcats' third straight noon home opener and their fourth overall.

Last year's loss to Iowa State was the first homecoming loss since the overtime loss to SMU during Luke Fickell's freshman year in 2017.

Stopping Arizona State's Skattebo is crucial for the Cincinnati Bearcats

Arizona State features running back Cam Skattebo, who is third nationally in all-purpose yards and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his role in the win over No. 16 Utah. UC's defense held UCF's top-rated offense to 13 points last week and linebacker Jake Golday was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. Antwan Peek Jr. was named to the Pro Football Focus National Team of the Week after forcing two UCF fumbles.

Welcome to Nippert Stadium Arizona State

According to Phil Steele's College Football Preview, Arizona State hasn't been this far east since the game against Georgia in 2009. It is their first trip to Ohio since facing Ohio State in 1980. UC won both previous meetings in Tempe in 1976 and 1954. The last was the final Cincinnati victory for Hall of Fame coach Sid Gillman.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs Arizona State Predictions

In my preseason picks, this was UC's fifth win of the season. While they had a hard time stopping Texas Tech's Tahj Brooks in a 44-41 loss in Lubbock, they held UCF's RJ Harvey under 100 yards in a 19-13 win in Orlando. Skattebo was under 100 in three games, including the only loss at Texas Tech, 30-22, where he was limited to 60 yards.

No matter what preparations the Sun Devils make, traveling across three time zones is difficult, especially with an early start time and a new quarterback.

Both teams have momentum, but UC hasn't been to Nippert in about a month and it should be ideal football weather for a team from the Midwest. I'm going to change my original score a bit, but stick with the Bearcats.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Arizona State injury updates

The biggest update of the week came early when Arizona declared starting quarterback Sam Leavitt out because of a rib injury he suffered in last week's win over Utah. Jeff Sims takes his place and has experience at Nebraska and Georgia Tech. In 2020, he helped Georgia Tech defeat Scott Satterfield's Louisville team with a fourth-quarter comeback.

The Bearcats have sidelined wide receiver Tyrin Smith with a hamstring injury. Receiver Aaron Turner has returned to practice, but UC will try to redshirt him along with running back Chance Williams to preserve a year of eligibility for both.
