Cleveland Guardians score against New York Yankees ALCS Game 4

play

CLEVELAND – The Guardians pulled out a wild, stunning 7-5 victory in an instant classic Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.

Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry likely saved the Guardians' life in the playoffs by hitting two home runs in the ninth and tenth innings, respectively. Starter Matthew Boyd was great again and makes the case that the Guardians need to re-sign him beyond this season. Lane Thomas, Andres Gimenez and Kyle Manzardo were the unsung heroes.

Instead of going down 3-0, the Guardians enter Game 4 on Friday night at 2-1 and have a chance to even the series.

Stephen Vogt won't let Gavin Williams face the Yankees' heart twice after he was tagged for two home runs in the first two innings.

Left-handed pitcher Erik Sabrowski entered the game with one out in the third inning. Juan Soto will be his starting batter.

The Guardians bullpen will be responsible for 20 outs tonight.

Brayan Rocchio had a runner on, but he was caught at the warning track in left center field, and the Yankees and Luis Gil will hold their 3-1 lead into the third inning.

Gavin Williams seemed to calm down after the rough start, but Austin Wells hit a solo home run to center field in the second inning to end that short, positive run.

It was already a tough outing for Williams with both Soto and Wells on the field. It's 3-1 for the Yankees. The Guardians' offense will have to scale back their workload to keep up.

The Guardians responded almost immediately.

Steven Kwan drew a walk and was chased by Kyle Manzardo, who doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position.

Jose Ramirez scored a run on a sacrifice fly to left field, making the score 2-1. Luis Gil then recovered and the Guardians were unable to win the second run.

The Yankees are 2-1 in the second inning.

The Guardians have turned to Gavin Williams for Game 4. The start is not good.

Gleyber Torres scored with a hard single in the first inning, and Juan Soto then launched a two-run home run to right-center field, giving the Yankees an almost immediate 2-0 lead.

Aaron Judge followed with a 115 mph groundout, which equated to an out, but it's not a good sign when the first three batters all have exit velocities above 105 mph.

So much for last night's momentum. Terry Francona used to say that momentum in baseball only extended to the next day's starting pitcher. The Yankees leaned into it in the first inning.
