The NHL and Amazon announced in June that they would release a documentary series in the fall offering a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of 11 NHL stars. A trailer for the series was released today, along with a name – Faceoff: Insights into the NHL – and a release date of October 4th.

The series will consist of six episodes filmed during the 2023-24 season, each focusing on two or three players. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman will be the focus of the fifth episode. Cup or Bust Part Iwhile McDavid will share the spotlight with Panthers striker Matthew Tkachuk in Cup or Bust Part II.

Hyman's inclusion is a nice surprise, as he was not among the 11 players mentioned in the series' original announcement in June. Other episodes feature William Nylander, David Pastrnak, Quinn Hughes and Jack Eichel, among others.

The series is designed to give NHL fans unprecedented access to their favorite teams and players both on and off the ice. The trailer alone has already given us more insight into McDavid than we normally get. A short clip shows the Oilers captain screaming in his dressing room after a poor performance on the road during the Stanley Cup Final.

This is just a portion of today's announcements from the NHL and Amazon. After announcing last week that some Oilers games this season will be broadcast exclusively on Prime Video, the NHL has shed a little more light on the situation.

Her latest project with Amazon is First-class hockey on Monday eveninga weekly show that airs exclusively on Prime Video on, you guessed it, Monday nights. The Oilers will be featured in four of these shows:

  • Against New Jersey on November 4

  • In Montreal on November 18

  • Against Florida on December 16

  • Against Los Angeles on April 14

Amazon also announced NHL From coast to coasta NFL Red Zone-style show on Thursday night that takes viewers on a tour of the evening's action across the league.

Finally, Amazon announced the commentary team for Monday Night Hockey, including Oilers legend Mark Messier and former NHL players Thomas Hickey and Jody Shelley.
