“Danced through the madness of our childhood”

Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone has died. He was 63.

Christopher died “peacefully” of cancer in Michigan on Friday, his rep confirmed to The Post on Sunday.

The 66-year-old music icon responded to Ciccone's death in a heartfelt statement on Sunday.

“My brother Christopher is gone. He was the person closest to me for so long. It's hard to explain our bond. But it came from the realization that we were different and society would make things difficult for us if we didn’t follow the status quo.”

“We held hands and danced through the madness of our childhood. In fact, dance was a kind of superglue that held us together.”

“Discovering dance in our small Midwestern town saved me, and then my brother came along, and that saved him too.”

In a lengthy message shared on social media, Madonna continued: “The last few years have not been easy. We didn't speak to each other for some time until my brother got sick. We found each other again.”

“I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible. Towards the end he was in so much pain. Once again we held hands, closed our eyes and danced. Together.”

Christopher's “loving” husband, British hairdresser Ray Thacker, was “faithfully by his side” when he died, the spokesman said.

Christopher's death comes less than two weeks after his and Madonna's stepmother Joan Clare Ciccone died from cancer. The siblings also lost their brother Anthony Ciccone in February 2023.

Christopher was an artist, interior architect and designer. He served as art director for Madonna's Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990 and was tour director for her The Girlie Show in 1993.

He also directed music videos for Dolly Parton and Tony Bennett in the 1990s.

The brother-sister duo had a falling out, which Christopher wrote about in his 2008 tell-all book Life With My Sister Madonna, which became a New York Times bestseller.

Christopher claimed Madonna outed him in her 1991 interview with The Advocate, in which she said: “My brother Christopher is gay, and he and I have always been the closest members of my family.”

He also accused Madonna's ex-husband Guy Ritchie, to whom she was married from 2000 to 2008, of homophobia.

Additionally, Christopher said the “turning point” in his relationship with the Grammy winner was when she took cameras to her mother's grave for their 1991 documentary “Truth or Dare.”

“I kept it to myself, but I thought, 'Okay, now there are no limits.' You know, my mother is now a minor character – a small player in her life, her life story, and it hurt me. And I – my opinion of her changed in that moment. I never said anything about it,” he told “GMA” in 2008.

“I think ultimately she's a lonely person, and unfortunately she's really lonely at the top,” Christoper added of his sister.

Madonna's representative Liz Rosenberg told the Associated Press at the time that the singer had not read the revelations and found it “very disturbing” that Christopher “decided to sell a book based on his sister.”

Rosenberg added: “I have to assume that she has come to terms with the fact that they don't have a close and loving relationship. And with the publication of the book, I expect the likelihood of such a thing ever happening will disappear.”

Christopher opened up about his relationship with the “Vogue” singer in a 2012 interview with The Evening Standard.

“For me we are good. We are in contact with each other, even though I haven't seen her for a long time. We are a brother and a sister again. I don’t work for them and it’s better that way,” he said.

“I couldn't be prouder of her. She is a force to be reckoned with. Does she have the voice of Barbra Streisand? No,” Christopher also said about Madonna. “Can she dance like Martha Graham?” Probably not. But the combination of their skills made them great and left a great legacy for them and, through them, for me. So yeah, God bless her.”

Madonna tragically lost her stepmother shortly before Christopher died.

“Joan Clare Ciccone passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 24, 2024, after a brief encounter with a very aggressive form of cancer,” an online obituary said. “She will be terribly missed by her family and friends, whose lives she enriched with her enthusiasm, joy and love.”

Joan was married to Silvio, father of Christopher and Madonna, for 58 years.

Her mother, also named Madonna, died in December 1963 at the age of 30.

One of Madonna's other brothers, Anthony Ciccone, died of respiratory failure and throat cancer in February 2023 at the age of 66.
