Delicious ways to celebrate Rosh Hashanah 2024 in London

Whether you're eating kosher or just want a bit of holiday flavor, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Jewish New Year in London. We've rounded up some of our favorite foodie gifts and dining options to help you start 5785 the way you mean to.

Lilienblum: (not kosher)

Although you'll have to wait until the third day of the New Year, the celebrations at Eyal Shani's London restaurant promise to be delicious for adults. Expect homemade challah with apples and honey served at long tables, followed by a communal feast of Shani's specialties, which of course include his whole roasted cauliflower, his take on the Israeli classic sabich and a whole roasted sea bass. Tickets cost £75 per person, including food, pomegranate spritz and service. Book here.

Honey & Co Daily: (non-kosher)

Another one of my favorite restaurants that offers a fun, festive dining experience is Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer's newest spot. Their Rosh Hashanah Supper Club is set to take place on October 3 and 4, but the latter is already sold out, so you'll have to be quick to snag a ticket.

The £45 three-course sharing menu includes a mezze starter with dishes like baba ganoush with seeded lavoush crackers and beetroot sabzi with herbs and pomegranate; mains include slow-cooked chicken thighs braised in pomegranate molasses, onions and currants (you can also use aubergines for a meatless option) and baklava filled with spiced apple, nuts and honey syrup. They also offer a home delivery menu that's packed with figs, pomegranates and other fruity flavours.

Chabad – various locations (kosher)

A number of Chabad centres offer kosher community feasts. Choose from a range of centres, including Chabad Notting Hill's Rosh Hashanah dinner, which promises “flavours and traditions of this special holiday along with great food, song and meaningful holiday canapés”, with a Rosh Hashanah service before the meal. Book here. Prices (concessions until 25 September) are £38 for adults, £20 for children and children under 5 are free.

Other Chabad houses offering Rosh Hashanah meals (at varying prices) include Battersea, Islington and Golders Green.

At home:

1070: (kosher)

This kosher caterer can deliver the entire feast to your door. The menu has the full range: round challah breads with juicy raisins or a stunning honey and apple filling; chicken or butternut soup; roasted chicken; spicy Moroccan-style fish chraime; beef stew; lamb shank and a huge selection of salads and kugels and tsimmes. Desserts include chocolate mousse, apple and honey strudel and pear and chocolate crumble. More information here. Last orders are Wednesday 25th.th September.

Fress Bagelry and Delicatessen: (not kosher)
For something a little more casual, Fress delicatessen in Radlett has a full menu of delicacies such as fish balls, gefilte fish, salmon cakes, herring and a selection of salads, as well as babkas, bagels and the must-have round challah rolls. Their fabulous honey cake was one of our winners in last year's honey cake tasting competition, owner Martin's personal recipe. More information here.

Best Bakers:

Karma Bread: (not kosher)

Tami Isaacs, the self-proclaimed challah queen of Hampstead, offers a delicious selection of treats to order for your celebrations. The challah bread selection includes her premium apple-topped centerpiece loaf, decorated with apple slices and with space for a casserole dish for your honey, as well as an apple pecan honey; cinnamon raisin and round loaves with or without seeds.

She also bakes honey cakes and – as a less traditional but no less delicious option – a delicious babka (with chocolate or cinnamon) and offers vegan challah and babkas.

Charlotte’s Sourdough (Kosher):

My favorite kosher bakery also has a range of foodie gifts. Pomegranate shaped buns, sourdough spelt honey cake, whole grain sourdough cookies with chocolate and hazelnut, sourdough babkas with fillings such as dates, almonds and rose petals, apple and cinnamon and halva, pistachio and rose petals, and focaccia with toppings such as za'atar, olives and red onion, rosemary and garlic and halva, pistachio and rose petals.

Their sourdough challahs contain apple and cinnamon, date, silan and sesame seed, and chocolate flavors.

The gifts can be packaged in their regular paper bags or in a natural jute shopping bag, both with gift tags and both at an additional cost.
