Des Moines police are asking for help finding hit-and-run suspects

Des Moines police urged the public Monday to be on the lookout for a suspect injured in a hit-and-run crash on the city's South Side earlier this month that left three pedestrians injured, including one critically.

Des Moines police and the Des Moines Fire Department responded to investigate a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle in the 800 block of Army Post Road around 7:40 p.m. on Oct. 9, Sgt. Paul said Parizek in a press release. First responders found two unconscious men, a 42-year-old and a 45-year-old, on the road.

The 42-year-old is in critical condition and the 45-year-old is in serious condition, Parizek said.

A third person, a 25-year-old man, suffered a minor foot injury and refused medical attention, he said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the three pedestrians were walking northbound on the 800 block of Army Post Road when they were struck by a minivan that fled the scene, the release said. Officers found a minivan matching the description in the 6500 block of Chaffee Road with damage consistent with the accident.

The owner of the minivan was identified as 32-year-old Renato Virves, police said in a social media post.

Virves, who has a prominent right eye, is 5 feet 10 inches to 5 inches tall and weighs 130 to 150 pounds, police said. Virves is known to wear a silver grill on his teeth. Police said he most recently lived on the south side of Des Moines.
