Detroit Tigers make surprise roster change as playoff pressure mounts

With six games left in the regular season, the Detroit Tigers are making a surprising roster change. In order to secure their first playoff ticket since 2014, they have called up top talent Jackson Jobe to the team.

From Cody Stavenhagen on social media:

The Tigers call up Jackson Jobe.

He is expected to pitch from the bullpen from now on

According to a source, Shelby Miller will be DFA'd

According to MLB.com, Jobe is the organization's second-best prospect. The 22-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft. He was selected as the No. 3 overall pick and hails from Oklahoma.

He dealt with a lot of injuries in the minor leagues, but only made 21 appearances this season, all of them starts. He went 5-3 with a 2.36 ERA in three different levels. He made just two appearances in Triple-A, but went 4-2 with a 1.95 ERA in Double-A.

The following is from part of his MLB.com prospect profile:

After throwing more dead-zone fastballs in high school, the 6-foot-2 right-hander has added more oomph to the heater, targeting an induced vertical break of 18 inches on the 94-97 mph pitch. As if that wasn't dangerous enough, his 82-85 mph slider remains his best work, with spin rates regularly above 3,000 rpm and a sweeping horizontal movement of 10-17 inches. For 2023, he added an 88-92 mph cutter that gave him a tighter, more controllable look, and his mid-80s changeup was improved with more killed spin, making him a tough at-bat for lefties as well.

The Tigers enter Monday's game with an 82-74 record, tied for second and third wild-card spots in the American League. Both teams are 1.0 games ahead of the Minnesota Twins and 2.0 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners.

The Tigers will compete in a new series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Tuesday.
