Dirt Cheap will close all 9 bankruptcy stores in Louisiana | Business

Dirt Cheap, a Mississippi-based chain of stores that sells returned and liquidated goods, has filed for bankruptcy protection and plans to close all of its locations.

The chain announced the plan to close 68 stores in documents filed in a Delaware bankruptcy court.

According to the company website, Dirt Cheap has 9 locations in Louisiana, including locations in Lafayette, Slidell, Hammond, Amite, Bogalusa, Houma, Bossier City, Monroe and Franklinton. A Zachary store recently closed.

According to Facebook, clearance sales have begun at all Dirt Cheap stores.

Dirt Cheap stocks its stores with items returned to retailers like Target, Amazon and Macy's, as well as overstock, seasonal merchandise and liquidations. The chain says customers can save 40 to 90% off retail prices.

Dirt Cheap's extreme discounts and rotating inventory helped the company build a following online, with shoppers discussing how to get the best deals and their tricks for finding treasures among the clutter of clothing racks and shelves.

But even with these steep discounts, reduced customer purchasing power caused by inflation took its toll on Dirt Cheap. Other discount retailers have felt the same pain: Big Lots, Conn's HomePlus, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree have closed thousands of stores nationwide in recent months.
