Doctors sound the alarm about insanely popular streusel cookies with 1,200 calories each: 'Diabetes in a box'

An up-and-coming cult cookie brand is causing a stir with its amazingly high-calorie, high-sugar offerings.

Utah-based Crumbl has launched a new flavor that contains 1,130 calories, which is four and a half times more than a Krispy Kreme glazed donut.

Crumbl's $4 brownie sundae — which has become a viral hit — also contains 10 grams of sugar, three times the CDC's total daily recommended amount for an adult male.

Boston-based food policy expert and Northeastern University professor Dr. Darin Detwiler, told DailyMail.com that the nutritional values were “alarming” given the cookies' increasing popularity.

Since its founding in 2017, Crumbl has expanded to more than 800 locations worldwide, making it the fastest-growing cookie company in the United States. Social media videos of fitness influencers eating them quickly have garnered millions of views.

Dr. Detwiler said that while the cookies make for an occasional treat, regularly consuming products with so much sugar, saturated fat and calories could be harmful to overall health.

He continues: “Cookies and highly processed foods like these are the leading cause of the health and obesity problem in the United States.”

“If these cookies were firearms, they would be illegal.”

Many people on social media have also branded the Crumbl cookies as “diabetes in a box.”

Crumbl's Brownie Sundae — consisting of a “gooey” brownie, “velvety” vanilla mousse, warm fudge, rainbow sprinkles, and “a cherry on top” — is currently only available at select stores, including the Las Vegas outpost.

While it's currently the highest-calorie dessert at Crumbl, the dessert brand's other offerings also have a lot to offer.

The second strongest option is the tres leche cake, which delivers 970 calories per dessert thanks to a combination of fluffy vanilla cake, tres leches sauce and whipped cream.

Meanwhile, two new seasonal favorites – Caramel Apple and Maple Cream Sandwich – each deliver 860 calories.

Even the simplest recipe – a milk chocolate chip cookie – contains 730 calories.

The lowest calorie offering on Crumbl's menu right now is the seasonal Pumpkin Chocolate Chip, with each full round containing 470 calories.

Dr. Detwiler says desserts don't have to be calorie-free, but ideally a dessert serving would be between 200 and 400 calories “to provide enjoyment without excessively contributing to your daily calorie intake.”

A popular dessert that falls into this category is the Dunkin' Donuts Glazed Donut.

One donut contains 240 calories, 11g fat and 13g sugar.

Many content creators post reviews of the flavors daily, with new releases receiving the most traffic.

TikToker @cillastyle reviewed Crumbl's new chocolate sundae brownie and gave it a big thumbs up.

In her video review, she tells viewers: “The middle is so gooey and fudgy, it's so good… that's a 10 out of 10 for me.”

Likewise, @morganchompz gives Crumbl's Caloric release a rave review.

After tasting the hefty slice, she says, “This is impressive, it really tastes like a brownie sundae and stuff.”

“I'm really very impressed.” The brownie itself is fudgy, soft and chewy, all is well. It works together.'

Dr. Detwiler told DailyMail.com that while Crumbl offers “transparent” nutritional information on its website, the way it is presented can mislead customers.

Each label initially lists the nutritional values “per serving,” when it is only a fraction of the actual dessert.

Dr. Detwiler highlighted this as an “opportunity for misinformation,” adding, “Without clear labeling, consumers could underestimate calorie and nutritional value, which is particularly concerning with oversized portions like those offered by Crumbl.”

“In addition, in any fast-growing food company, there is a potential risk of supply chain fraud (ingredient mislabeling) or food safety lapses, particularly if the brand is growing faster than its ability to maintain strict quality controls.”

Part of its unique selling point is that it offers a unique, weekly-changing menu with six new flavors and, according to its website, more than a million cookies are sold per day.
