Dodgers' Dave Roberts believes Manny Machado threw the ball “on purpose” at him in the dugout after a “disturbing” video

Tension is already building in Game 3 of the NLDS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres following Game 2's incidents of thrown objects, verbal abuse from players on opposing teams, and the historic rivalry beyond.

But Padres star third baseman Manny Machado, who threw a ball into the Dodgers' dugout — a dugout he once shared as a team member — has gone to the MLB league office for an investigation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Manager Dave Roberts also believes Machado didn't simply put the ball out of play because Padres pitcher Yu Darvish got another ball from his catcher.

Roberts said he believes Machado intentionally threw the ball into the dugout, which almost hit him, after watching a video that went viral.

“I didn’t notice it at the time. I really didn’t notice,” Roberts said Monday, according to the New York Post. “I didn't notice. I saw the video and it was disturbing. Obviously I've had a relationship with Manny for years. There was intention behind it. It didn’t come close to hitting me because there was a net.”

“And that was very annoying. If it was directed at me, I would be very – it's pretty disrespectful. So I don't know his intention. I don't want to speak for him. But I saw the video. And the ball was aimed at me with something behind it. But I don't know what led to it. I didn't see it in real time, but I saw the video.

Machado was at the center of one aspect of the Game 2 drama when he yelled at Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty, who told him to “sit down, motherf—–” after hitting him in the sixth inning.

Machado, now at third base, continued to engage in a war of words with Flaherty and appeared to say he would meet with him after the game.

Flaherty explained why they were barking at each other.

“He did some s— between innings where he threw the ball into our dugout and everyone caught the back end of it, meaning me and him are trying,” Flaherty said, referring to on the ball that was thrown in the direction of Roberts. “I was sitting there for my team, I didn't attack him, but he threw the ball into our dugout and the referees immediately went over to tell him – I don't know what they were talking about, but our dugout was being shot at.” because there is no reason for it.

It is normal for players to throw balls out of play when not in use, sometimes letting them trickle towards the opponent's dugout. But Machado obviously sped up the throw a bit, even though he said there was no reason for it.

“I throw balls into dugouts all the time. In both dugouts,” he said, according to The Post. “They have bat boys, you throw the ball back in there.”

Roberts added that he shook his head at Machado while the third baseman and Flaherty went back and forth, saying he was trying to dissuade Machado about Fernando Tatis Jr. being intentionally hit by his pitcher the inning earlier.

“As a baseball player, everyone understands that you don't do that by intentionally putting the leader on base so that three, four, five come up behind him. “It just doesn’t make sense,” Roberts said.
