A man arrested Monday in connection with a double murder that later triggered an Amber Alert for three missing children was found hiding in the back seat of a car as he tried to flee Austin with the help of his brother, police said on Tuesday with.

Sherles Gregorio Machado-Hernandez, 31, is charged with the murders of Francis Kaina Anseume Corredor and Bryan Florentino Flores Alvarez. Police said Machado and Anseume were married under common law and he was the father of two of their three children.

Police Detective Matthew Jones said there is a pending child protection case between Machado and Anseume.

Officers found Anseume and Flores dead with apparent gunshot wounds around 7:30 a.m. Monday in a vehicle at an apartment complex at 1805 Burton Drive in southeast Austin. Police saw on security video footage one of the victims' vehicles pull into the parking lot around 2:50 a.m. and then another vehicle driven by Machado drove into the parking lot about 35 minutes later, Jones said.

After the bodies were found, Police determined Anseume had three missing children, and police's main priority was locating the three children, said Adam Curvin of the Austin Police Department's tactical intelligence unit.

The Amber Alert for the three children was sent out around 4 p.m. Monday, and family members called within an hour to tell police that Machado had dropped the children off with them at 5401 Decker Lane, Curvin said.

Police learned that Machado abandoned his vehicle and took a gray Toyota Highlander with an Illinois license plate, officials said. Curvin said officers had “saturated” the area near where the children were found.

An undercover officer then found the Toyota and saw a man, now believed to be Machado's brother, exit the vehicle and get into a Kia with the license plate of another vehicle. Curvin said they believe this was done to “conceal his identity” and avoid prosecution.

Police feared the incident would turn into a chase due to the nature of the crime and the measures taken to avoid detection when they stopped the Kia, Curvin said. However, the police were able to easily stop the vehicle in a residential area.

Law enforcement officers found Machado hiding in the back seat, Curvin said, adding that the driver of the car was his brother, who is not currently charged with a crime.

Detective Randy DeLuna said police learned an interview in Machado's Child Protective Services case was scheduled for Tuesday. Investigators then learned that Machado had recently removed all three children from their school and given a new address in Niederwald, a city southeast of Austin, where all the children lived.

DeLuna said it was unclear whether Machado had contact with Anseume that night and police were unsure how he located her. DeLuna said Anseume and Flores were dating.

It's unclear how long Machado had the children, but DeLuna said the children were missing Monday from 3:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Machado made no statement to police, DeLuna said. He was booked into the Travis County Jail. His bail has not been set and there was no information about who is representing him.

Police did not answer questions about Machado's criminal history.

Police Chief Lisa Davis praised the department's work in arresting Machado and used Tuesday's news conference to talk about family violence.

“A coward who killed the mother of his children and left three children motherless, and how devastating that violence is affects every part of this murder, right down to our patrol,” Davis said.
