Elon Musk apparently confirms decision to change X's locking function

X is reportedly planning to change its blocking feature in the near future, allowing users to see the public posts of the people they have blocked.

The news was announced on Monday afternoon by a web developer named Nima Owji.

“BREAKING NEWS: X is about to remove the current block button. This means that posts from a public account will be visible to the blocked users too!” wrote Owji.

X owner Elon Musk apparently confirmed the news in a reply to Owji, in which he expressed his appreciation for the change in functionality.

“It's about time this happened,” said the CEO of Tesla, Inc. “The blocking feature blocks this account from interacting with public posts, but does not prevent them from being viewed.”

Musk's post was met with mostly negative reactions. Owji responded to Musk by saying he thought the decision was a “good move.”

“The block button for public accounts was a stupid feature because anyone could see the posts in their browser’s incognito mode,” he explained.

Hundreds of X users expressed their concerns about this move, with the majority of commenters pointing out the problem of harassment on the platform.

“Eh, I'm not a fan of this, to say the least,” wrote Jeremy Clark, senior fellow at the Claremont Institute. “It's too easy for malicious actors to just take a screenshot and tell their unblocked followers to harass an account.”

“With all due respect, I think this is a bad idea,” rapper Zuby responded. “There are many reasons why someone might not want certain people to be able to easily see all of their public posts. Unfortunately, there are REALLY bad actors on social media.”
