England complete record-breaking Test with an innings victory over Pakistan

England achieved one of their most memorable Test victories when they defeated Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs in Multan.

On the fifth and final day of the first Test on Friday, Pakistan were bowled out for 220 in the first session.

Salman Ali Agha (63) and Aamer Jamal (55 not out) delayed the inevitable with their half-century struggles.

Number 11 Abrar Ahmed was unable to bat due to fever as Pakistan endured the embarrassment of becoming the first Test playing country to lose a game by an innings after scoring over 500 runs in the first innings.

Left-arm spinner Jack Leach took all three wickets on the final morning and finished with 4-30 after fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and debutant Brydon Carse defeated the Pakistan top order on the fourth evening.

At 6-152, Agha and Jamal put up resistance for an hour, extending their partnership to 109 before Leach struck in his first over when he got Agha caught lbw with a straight throw.

Leach then quickly ended the tail by grabbing a stunning low-return catch from Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah was stumped after hitting the left-arm spinner for a straight six.

England had broken a number of Test records when they posted a tally of 7-823, built on Harry Brooks' belligerent triple century and Joe Root's impeccable 262 in reply to Pakistan's first innings score of 556.

On Wednesday, Root also became England's top Test run-scorer.

Pakistan's dismal run in Test cricket continued with captain Shan Masood losing his sixth straight match since being appointed captain last year.

It was also Pakistan's seventh home defeat in 11 Tests, with their last win coming against South Africa in February 2021.

The second test begins next Tuesday in Multan.

The final Test of the series is scheduled in Rawalpindi from October 24.
