Ethel Kennedy, widow of RFK, died at age 96 after suffering a stroke

Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family and widow of Robert F. Kennedy, has died at age 96 of complications from a stroke, her family said.

“It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our great grandmother,” Joe Kennedy III said on X. “She died this morning as a result of complications from a stroke she suffered last week.”

Ethel Kennedy, whose late husband was assassinated during the 1968 presidential campaign, raised 11 children, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who recently ended a failed attempt to win the White House.

Kennedy's life was marked by regular tragedies. In addition to her husband's death, her parents died in a plane crash in 1955, her brother died in a crash in 1966, while her son David died of a drug overdose and Michael Kennedy, another son, died in a skiing accident.

Funeral services have not been announced.
