Ferrari introduces new super sports car, the F80

High-performance automaker Ferrari unveiled its first new supercar in more than a decade on Thursday, and it's already sold out.

The Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars introduced the F80, which combines elements from endurance motorsport competitions and Formula 1. Ferrari announced that only 799 examples of the special edition will be produced, and despite the base price of $3.9 million, every model has already been sold.

The F80 features a six-cylinder, three-liter full hybrid engine with a total of 1,200 horsepower, racing brake pads, state-of-the-art active suspension and ultra-light 3D printed metal parts, including control arms.

The F80 “is the car that raises the bar of our product range,” said Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera during his presentation in Ferrari’s hometown of Maranello. “It’s a car that we hope will make history in the years to come.”

Ferrari's so-called super sports cars are top-of-the-line special models that come onto the market every ten years and embody innovative technological features.

The most recent Ferrari supercar was the 2013 LaFerrari, whose open-top LaFerrari Aperta version was launched in 2016. The first was the GTO, which came out 40 years ago.

Although new, the F80's engine is based on the same architecture used by Ferrari in the World Endurance Championship, where it won the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and uses Formula 1 technologies.
