Fire concerns go hand in hand with a good prognosis

It looks like the frosty morning is behind us, at least for a little while. We are seeing a warming trend as we head into another nice weekend.

The fire threat remains the only weather-related concern this weekend. Increasing drought, dry air and breezy afternoon winds will lead to increased fire danger through the weekend. Use extreme caution around all fire sources. Whether you're grilling or relaxing around the fire pit with friends, be aware of your fire and put it out quickly if it gets out of control.

The weekend looks to be ideal for leaf-peeking, as fall foliage is expected to intensify with this week's cold temperatures. It looks like we are on track to reach peak fall color in late October.

There are signs that a more favorable rainfall pattern is finally emerging. We'll be recording on Monday evening next week as a storm blows through the middle of the country. The drought will extend for 28 consecutive days across much of the area, with no measurable rainfall at this time. If we don't get the expected showers, we may stay dry into the last week of the month, approaching the longest dry spell ever recorded in Springfield, 33 days.

Halloween week should bring chances for wet weather as a trough forms in the west. That should open up the Gulf and lead to some rain chances. A long-term view of Halloween suggests the likelihood of mild temperatures and the possibility of showers.
