Frozen waffle products sold at major retailers have been recalled due to listeria risk

Frozen waffles sold at popular retailers in the US are being recalled due to possible Listeria contamination.

Illinois-based manufacturer TreeHouse Foods has voluntarily recalled some of its frozen waffle products due to the possibility of Listeria monocytogenes contamination during production, according to an Oct. 18 notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The frozen waffle products are sold in stores such as Walmart, Target, Harris Teeter and Publix, among others, and include several brands such as Kodiak, Good & Gather and Simple Truth.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products, the company said in the statement.

TreeHouse Foods advises anyone who has purchased the products to discard them and contact the retailer where they were purchased for a credit.

The recall was made with the knowledge of the FDA, according to the press release.

Symptoms of a listeria infection

Symptoms of invasive listeriosis, which means listeria has spread beyond the intestines, typically begin within two weeks of eating food contaminated with listeria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC noted that symptoms can become severe and that nearly one in six non-pregnant people infected with invasive listeriosis dies.

According to the agency, symptoms in pregnant women are usually mild and some never experience symptoms. However, infection can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn.
