Listeria bacteria cause listeriosis, the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the United States. Symptoms may include fever, muscle pain and fatigue. An infection can also cause neck stiffness, headaches, confusion, or seizures. Older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for serious consequences.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,600 people are infected with listeria and about 260 die from infection annually.

This recall follows a recent series of listeria outbreaks, including a recall in late July of more than 7.2 million pounds of Boar's Head deli meat. Ready-to-eat meat and poultry products manufacturer BrucePac also recently recalled more than 11.7 million pounds of product due to possible Listeria contamination.
