'Frustrated' Tom Selleck slams CBS over cancellation of 'Blue Bloods'

Tom Selleck isn't hiding his disappointment after CBS canceled his long-running show “Blue Bloods.”

The 79-year-old has played the role of Commissioner Frank Reagan in the crime drama since the series debuted in 2010.

After 14 years of TV reign, the broadcaster announced last year that the hit show would end in the fall. In a brand new interview with TV Insider, Selleck shared that he was “frustrated” with CBS' decision.

“I’m kind of frustrated,” a candid Selleck said. “During these last eight shows, I didn’t want to talk about the end of Blue Bloods, but rather the fact that it’s still a huge success.”

He then spoke about Blue Bloods viewers, arguing that the series still draws attention to the screen.

“In the top 100 shows from 2023 to 2024 (we were number 9 out of 100 in terms of total viewers), excluding the three football shows, we are number 6!” I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy , who says, “Get off my lawn!” I don't believe in holding grudges, but if you told the television station, “Here's a show you can schedule in the worst time slot you have, and that will guarantee you win on Friday nights for the next 15 years.” “It would be almost impossible to believe,” Selleck shared.

The Emmy winner admitted: “What frustrates me is that the show has always been taken for granted because it worked right from the start. How do I feel? It will take a long time to sort this all out.”

Selleck remembered filming the last episode.

“I remember after the weekend (shooting the final episode) I said, 'I have to go to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.' Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while,” he shared.

When asked what he will miss most about “Blue Bloods,” Selleck answered without hesitation.

“The actors. The actors' family is as close-knit as the Reagan family and the characters they play. “There isn’t a single one of them who didn’t want to come back,” he said. “Most shows don’t end like that – there’s petty jealousy and all sorts of things – and we seemed to overcome that. It’s something everyone can hang their hat on and be proud of.”

Selleck's cast includes Donnie Wahlberg (Det. Danny), Len Cariou (PC Henry), Will Estes (Sgt. Jamie Reagan), Vanessa Ray (Officer Eddie Janko) and Bridget Moynahan (ADA Erin Reagan).

While he's upset the show is coming to an end, CBS Studios president David Stapf hints at a possible spinoff.

“There are endless possibilities, what a Blue blood “A spinoff would look like that,” Stapf said after the announcement. “We have a whole season (of Blue blood) to go… so we still have time to think about a spin-off.”

This isn't the first time Selleck has expressed his feelings about the show's cancellation.

In May, the actor revealed that he may no longer be able to afford his ranch in California after the series ends. He told “CBS Sunday Morning” he was in danger of losing property in Ventura County, California.

“That is always a problem. If I stopped working, yes. Am I ready for life? Yes, but maybe not on a 150-acre ranch!” said the former “Magnum PI” star.

Despite his disappointment, he made it clear that he will not be retiring from Hollywood.

“I hope there is another Western in my future. Whatever happens with Blue Bloods, I certainly won't stop acting. “I still hope CBS comes to its senses,” Selleck said.

The second half of the final season of “Blue Bloods” will air on CBS with eight episodes starting October 18, 2024.
