George Baldock: Former Sheffield United defender dies aged 31 | Football News

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has died aged 31, the Greek Super League has announced.

Greece international Baldock signed for Panathinaikos this summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and made his debut in August.

The full-back, who was not named in Greece's squad for Thursday's game against England, featured in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Olympiacos.

Reports from Greece said Baldock's body was found at his home in the Athens suburb of Glyfada.

A statement from Super League Greece said: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sadness at the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our international George Baldock and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

England international and former Sheffield United player Harry Maguire posted “RIP” and a heartbreak emoji alongside a picture of Baldock on Instagram.

Northampton, where Baldock was on loan in 2011, wrote on X: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31.”

“George played five games in 2011 before playing for Oxford United and Sheffield United. We extend our sincere condolences to George’s family and friends.”

Baldock was born in England and began his professional career at MK Dons, where he spent eight years.

After several loan moves to clubs such as Tamworth, Oxford United and Northampton, the defender moved permanently to Sheffield United in 2017.

He went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Blades – including 83 appearances in the Premier League, where he scored two goals and provided six assists – before moving to Greek club Panathinaikos this summer.

The defender, who played twelve times for the Greek national team, made four appearances across all competitions this season.
