Hansi Flick on the history between Barcelona and Bayern Munich: “The past doesn’t matter. The present is what counts.”

Speech at his pre-game press conference (via @iMiaSanMia) Before FC Bayern Munich's Champions League game against Barcelona, former head coach Hansi Flick spoke about his history with the team.

Flick was head coach at Bayern until 2021. During his time at the club, he won six trophies in one year in 2020, when he was signed as an interim replacement for Niko Kovac before taking on the role permanently. Flick would win another Bundesliga a year later before becoming Germany's head coach.

Flick said about the game that was special for him:

“We prepare every game the same way. Of course, I was at FC Bayern as a player and coach and had success there. I have a lot of friends there, players and management. It was a great time for me. I have beautiful memories. But now I'm living a new chapter here in Barcelona. I am very happy here. It’s a special (game), but it’s our obligation to give everything for the fans.”

Barcelona are also on a major losing streak against Bayern, having not beaten them since a 3-0 win in the 2015 Champions League semi-final. While Flick's Bayern suffered their heaviest defeat since when they were beaten 8-2 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2020, Bayern won the title this year.

Regarding Barca's series of defeats against Bayern, Flick said:

“The past doesn’t matter. The present is what counts. We cannot change what happened in the past. We are focused on doing our best tomorrow. Of course we will try to beat Bayern.”

Since Flick left the Bayern role, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Kompany have all been head coaches. The former midfielder commented on Bayern's season so far under Kompany:

“Bayern is having a very good season. Vincent Kompany and his employees do an excellent job. They press very high and are courageous with and without the ball. It's going to be a tough game. But we will try to do our best and be ready for tomorrow.”
