One of the most important games of Week 9 of the 2024 college football season features two of the sport's most iconic and historic programs: Navy and Notre Dame.

The Midshipmen and Fighting Irish also have one of the longest and most distinctive rivalries in college football, as both programs first met in 1927 and clashed in stadiums across the country – including internationally, at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin that year 2023.

This Saturday, Navy and Notre Dame meet not only for the 97th time, but also as two top-25 programs. The Week 9 contest between the Midshipmen and Irish will mark the 10th time both programs have faced off as ranked teams, according to Notre Dame's media guide, as Navy is off to a historic 6-0 start this season.

When was Navy football's last win against Notre Dame?

Navy's last win over Notre Dame came on November 5, 2016. In the Week 10 showdown at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, the Midshipmen earned a rare one-point victory over the Irish.

The Midshipmen overcame a 17-14 halftime deficit to defeat the Irish 28-27. Navy had 368 yards of total offense, including 320 yards on the ground. Will Worth, the Midshipmen's 6-foot-1 quarterback, ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter. He also completed 5 of 8 passes for 48 yards on the day.

With the victory, Navy secured its fourth victory over Notre Dame since 2007. The Midshipmen's last win before that was in 1963.

How many times has Navy football beat Notre Dame?

According to Navy's football media guide, Navy has beaten Notre Dame 13 times in their last 96 meetings, with the Fighting Irish holding a commanding edge of 82-13-1.

Navy's first win over Notre Dame came on November 4, 1933 in Baltimore, when the Midshipmen emerged with a narrow 7-0 victory. It was the start of a two-game winning streak for Navy vs. Notre Dame that had only occurred three times in the 1956-67, 1960-61 and 2009-10 seasons.

The Midshipmen have won at Notre Dame five times over the years, including 1957, 1961, 1963, 2007 and 2009. Of Navy's five victories at Notre Dame Stadium, perhaps none is more famous than the 2007 victory. The 48-44- The Midshipmen's triple-overtime win ensured Navy lost to Notre Dame for 43 games – which was the longest loss to a single opponent in NCAA history, according to ESPN.

Navy is 1-6 against Notre Dame when both programs meet in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which hosts Saturday's game between the Midshipmen and Irish.
