Homewood Mountain Resort will not be open this ski season

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KOLO) – A ski resort in Lake Tahoe won't open this year after a partner held off the investment pending permit approval.

Homewood Mountain Resort posted a notice on its website Friday saying it was unable to sell season passes and therefore would not be opening this year.

Homewood said it submitted what it called a minor revision to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's 2011 master plan in May. Proposed changes include moving the gondola station to a more skier-friendly location, reducing building and residential density and opening mountain and lake viewing corridors, Homewood said.

Approval is still pending. As a result, Homewood's financial partner has discontinued support for this ski season.

“Unlike other small ski areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin such as Diamond Peak, Homewood is a private company and is not supported by public taxes or other community contributions,” Homewood said in a statement. “We have been relying on our financial partner for the annual subsidy for several years.”

The TRPA said it was aware of the announcement.

“The agency has worked with Homewood management, partner agencies and community representatives to review master plan changes proposed by property owners and continue to address critical issues, including public access,” the TRPA said. “When Homewood Mountain Resort completes its work, the Board of Directors will consider the proposal. TRPA recognizes how important Homewood is to skiers and snowboarders, as well as to the West Coast, and we remain committed to keeping the community informed about the public process in the coming months.”

Homewood is located on the western shore of Lake Tahoe.
