Honor Flight San Diego departs for DC

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – A special group of veterans will land in Washington DC on Friday as part of Honor Flight San Diego.

It is the second flight this year that the nonprofit organization has organized.

It's sure to be a powerful journey full of emotions and gratitude – and much of that was palpable from the start.

The veterans arrived at San Diego International Airport just before 5 a.m. Many of them came by bus or were brought there by friends and family.

It was a hero's welcome as a group of San Diego firefighters greeted them and escorted them into Terminal 2.

Honor Flight San Diego has been doing this for many years. It takes veterans from World War II, the Korean era, and Vietnam era—as well as veterans from all eras suffering from terminal illnesses—on a weekend trip to DC

This time, 92 veterans had the opportunity to visit memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.

These war heroes return to a big welcome party at the airport on Sunday.
