How OSU fared after the 32-31 Big Ten loss at Oregon

A game between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Oregon lived up to expectations and went to the finish in a wild atmosphere. The Ducks won 32-31 and many won't be surprised to see these teams meet again in the postseason.

Losses hurt, but they are not season-deciding this year because 12 teams make the playoffs and both teams are expected to get there.

How did the Buckeyes do? Vacation is granted in a ratio of zero to five.

Criminal offense in the US state of Ohio (3 sheets)

The Buckeyes did score 31 points and 467 yards against the No. 2 team in the country, but their inability to consistently run the ball and throw it deep hurt them.

Ohio State ran for 141 yards, but only 19 of those came in the second half on 12 carries. They played part of the game without injured left tackle Josh Simmons and right guard Tegra Tshabola, but Tshabola returned in the second half. The inability to walk to the right side remained.

And then there was the mismanagement of the clock on the last trip. After an offensive pass interference call against receiver Jeremiah Smith, it appeared as if the Buckeyes didn't know the clock had restarted and valuable time was wasted. Then, on the final play, quarterback Will Howard ran and slid as time expired, keeping the Buckeyes from a potential game-winning field goal.

TreVeyon Henderson finished the game with 87 yards rushing, but rushed for 53 yards on one play. Quinshon Judkins ran for 23 yards on 11 carries and had a costly fumble.

Emeka Egbuka was outstanding, with 10 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Smith had nine catches for 100 yards and a touchdown, but suffered the costly pass interference penalty.

Ohio State Defense (1 Sheet)

So much for all the hype.

The Buckeyes were beaten for 496 yards, the most they have given up since their loss to Georgia in a College Football Playoff semifinal in 2022. They didn't pressure Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, and the secondary proved to be a surprising weakness as the Ducks averaged 14.8 yards per completion.

Oregon had allowed seven sacks in its first five games, but Gabriel wasn't sacked once Saturday. Through the first six weeks, Ohio State was the only FBS team not to allow a pass of 30 or more yards, but Gabriel scored three times in the first half.

Cornerback Denzel Burke had a particularly rough night and likely saw his draft status drop.

A big 40-yard field goal from Jayden Fielding, who continued to shoot his field goals straight!

The Buckeyes also fell victim to a well-executed onside kick in which the Ducks passed the ball directly to Caleb Downs, who was in the front line of defenders. Downs tried to avoid the kick, but it bounced off him and Oregon recovered.

Ohio State Coaching (2 sheets)

Jim Knowles' defense continues to shine against good teams and struggle in big games.

Offensively, the Buckeyes appeared to be struggling in the first half with costly penalties and a delay in the start of the game. Ohio State failed to make the running game a factor in the second half. And the last trip wasn't handled well.

Fun Quotient (5 sheets)

A great game in a loud atmosphere. Games in Eugene are fun and this game lived up to expectations. Hey, we even got kicked out for spitting in someone's face.

Oregon Ducks (4 sheets)

The Ducks showed determination and toughness. They also showed creativity with an onside kick and big third-down plays. And they beat a team that is supposedly much more talented than them.

The downsides to their big night were a blown PAT, a missed field goal and a failed two-point conversion.

Otherwise, the Ducks were impressive.

Officiating (3 sheets)

Officials gave Ohio State a gift on the opening drive by not reviewing what was ruled a catch by tight end Will Kacmarek. Replays showed the play should have been ruled an interception. Ohio State deserves some credit for rushing to get the ball for the next play before the replay officials could intervene, and the Buckeyes scored three plays later.

It was a nice, decisive job by the officials to eject Oregon receiver Traeshon Holden for spitting in the face of Ohio State's Davison Igbinosun.

Smith's offensive pass interference was questionable in such a physical matchup and likely cost the Buckeyes the game.
