Homes and streets were flooded Thursday in Siesta Key, where Milton made landfall

Hurricane Milton left behind power outages, destruction and some fatalities after making landfall overnight on Wednesday as a major category three hurricane.

The storm brought winds of over 100 miles per hour and one millennium worth of rainfall. Up to 18 inches fell in some parts of Florida's west coast, with heavy rain across the state and in nearby Cuba.

As it traveled inland across the Florida Peninsula, Milton maintained category one strength with sustained winds of up to 90 miles per hour. It lost some power over land after its energy came from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Storm surges and tornadoes caused widespread flooding, with further flooding expected in the coming days. Several people were killedwith tornadoes claiming four lives in Lucie County before Milton made landfall.

Officials across Florida ordered evacuations as the storm approached, and more than three million homes and businesses reportedly lost power overnight Wednesday.

As residents and emergency responders continue their rescue operations and assess damage, we take a look at the effects of Hurricane Milton in pictures.
