Iowa State football beats Baylor at home; Cyclones are 5-0

Iowa State football improved its record to 5-0 – and started 2-0 in Big 12 play – with a win over Baylor at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Cyclones defeated the Bears 43-21 on Saturday.

Iowa State trailed early and only managed to get a couple of Kyle Konrardy field goals on the board. But a Ben Brahmer touchdown and a blocked punt that was returned for a Caden Matson touchdown gave the Cyclones their first lead – in the second quarter.

The Cyclones stuck with Baylor on the Bears' next goal and then pulled away in the third and fourth quarters to guarantee the win.

The Cyclones are off to a 5-0 start to the season for the first time since 1980 and 2-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2020.

Iowa State scored three more points on a 22-yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy. The Cyclones lead 43-21.

The Iowa State running back has a night ahead of him. He scored his second touchdown of the evening with a 20-yard run. He extends Iowa State's lead to 40-21 over Baylor.

Iowa State has a more comfortable lead early in the fourth quarter. Rocco Becht found Jayden Higgins with an 8-yard pass in the final minute of the third period. Iowa State leads 33-21 early in the fourth period.

Sawyer Robertson's pass intended for Monaray Baldwin was intercepted by Jontez Williams in the end zone. The Cyclones will take over at the 20 yard line.

Iowa State will be without Ta'Shawn James on defense after he was ejected and removed from the game for assault for a hit on Baylor's Bryson Washington.

Jaylon Jackson gave the Cyclones the go-ahead touchdown with a 10-yard run into the end zone. The kick after that was good and Iowa State leads the Bears 26-21 in the third quarter.

It took Baylor seven plays and just over two minutes to score on its first drive of the second half. Sawyer Robertson found Ketron Jackson Jr. with a 25-yard pass into the end zone. Baylor leads 21-19.

The Cyclones were able to score again and made it to the Baylor five-yard line. But Rocco Becht — trying to avoid a sack — threw an interception that was picked off by Garmon Randolph.

Baylor made a play and then let time expire. The Bears get a reception early in the second half.

The Cyclones defense came up big and forced Baylor to punt on fourth down. But Bears punter Palmer Williams thwarted the snap and Myles Mendeszoon blocked the kick attempt. Caden Matson grabbed the ball at the 25-yard line and sent it into the end zone.

Iowa State leads 19-14.

Set up by a 51-yard run by Jaylon Jackson – followed by a one-yard rush and an incomplete pass – Rocco Becht found Ben Brahmer up the middle with a 10-yard pass. The point-after attempt was unsuccessful and Baylor leads 14-12.

Baylor did Iowa State a favor by calling an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and returning the kick 15 yards, allowing the Cyclones to take control at their own 35-yard line.

Iowa State completed eight plays and settled for a 38-yarder from Konrardy.

Baylor leads 14-6.

The Bears start the second quarter with another touchdown. Sawyer Robertson sent an eight-yard pass into the arms of Michael Trigg for Baylor's second touchdown of the game. Baylor leads 14-3.

Iowa State is still without a touchdown at the end of the first frame and Baylor is close to adding another touchdown. The Bears begin the second play with the ball on the Cyclones' 11-yard line.

The Cyclones made it to the Baylor 27-yard line, but an incomplete pass to Jayden Higgins forced Matt Campbell to send Kyle Konrardy out to attempt a field goal. He sent the 45-yard attempt through the uprights, but Baylor led 7-3.

The Bears took advantage of their first drive of the game. After taking over a turnover on downs, Baylor marched downfield and scored on a four-yard pass from Sawyer Robertson to Josh Cameron.

Baylor leads 7-0.

Iowa State made it to the 15-yard line, disappearing with nearly six minutes left. But it ended with a turnover on downs when the Cyclones were on fourth-and-2 and Abu Sama was tackled for a loss of one yard.
