Is it finally time to abolish daylight saving time? People sound different

(WXYZ) — Daylight saving time was introduced as part of energy conservation efforts during World War I. She encouraged people to stay outside longer and thus use less electricity.

But once it came, it never went away. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 3rd and we fall back. That means earlier sunsets and more time in the dark.

Now people say they are ready to say goodbye.

“I don’t think they should have it,” Robert said.

“It’s a pain getting used to it twice a year, every year,” another woman told us.

Daylight saving time has been a hot topic of discussion for years. We asked people for their opinions on our Facebook page and hundreds responded with arguments for and against the time change.

Derek wrote: “Get rid of it. I don't like it when it gets dark at 5:30 p.m. No motivation to do anything when it gets dark.”

Melissa wrote: “I literally changed the time on my big clock last weekend because it's such a pain to change. I should have just left her as she was. Just stick to a time and stop changing it.”

“Ultimately I think we’re going to put an end to it,” Robert added.

The sleep specialist Dr. Anita Shelgikar said she hopes Robert is right.

“It is best for our health and our internal clock is more fully aligned with the timing of the sun and the position of the sun. This alignment is best achieved with permanent standard time,” said Shelgikar.

Our internal clock stays in tune with sunlight.

Shelgiker said not only is it a nuisance for people, it can even be life-threatening for some.

“Increased risk of stroke, increased hospitalizations, increased inflammatory markers in response to stress, increased traffic fatalities,” she said.

But will that ever change? The final decision is left to the legislature.
