Coach Tata Martino had great celebration after Lionel Messi and Inter Miami won the MLS Supporters' Shield title earlier this week.

“I drank two beers,” Martino said Friday after the club beat Columbus Crew 3-2 on Wednesday night to clinch the regular-season title.

Now it's back to business.

Messi and Inter Miami return to action in the penultimate game of the regular season at Toronto FC on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. If Inter Miami wins the remaining games, the team will collect 74 points, setting a new MLS regular season record.

Saturday's game will be Toronto's last of the season as it clinch the ninth and final spot in the MLS Eastern Conference playoff race. The conference's No. 8 and No. 9 teams will face off in a wild card game on Oct. 22 to decide which club opens the playoffs in a best-of-three series on Oct. 25 against Inter Miami becomes.

So there is something at stake for both clubs on Saturday in the MLS's standalone afternoon game.

“We want to win every game, so we will try to win the next two games,” said defender Ian Fray. “If that means we get 74 points, that’s great. We do this because we want to win every game.”

Will Messi play against Toronto?

It was not yet clear on Friday whether Messi would be available for the game in Toronto. He could start and play limited minutes, come off the bench, or possibly not play.

Messi has played five games since injuring his right ankle in the Copa America and most recently scored two goals in five minutes against Columbus, securing the club's second title since his arrival in July 2023.

While Martino noted that Messi is getting stronger with the minutes he logs and his rhythm is getting back into shape, the club wants to keep an eye on the minutes Messi plays on Saturday.

After the game in Toronto, Messi will play two World Cup qualifiers with the Argentina national team – against Venezuela on October 10th and against Bolivia on October 15th.

The MLS season ends on October 19, where Inter Miami hosts New England Revolution, who set the points record with 73 points in 2021.

“I understand people's expectations and the fact that they come to him,” Martino said of Messi's play in Toronto. “Nevertheless, we will try to decide what is best for his health.”
