While Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff is more known for his work with pop icons like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Lana Del Rey, he took center stage last night to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his own musical project: the album the Bleachers, A strange wishwhich has now been lovingly re-recorded and renamed, A stranger desires. On Friday, October 4, the band performed the album live for Bleachers: For One Night Only From The Studio To The Stage at Madison Square Garden, a tribute to Antonoff's childhood across the river in New Jersey.

As the concert's name suggests, Antonoff and the band wanted to showcase the life cycle of their Grammy-winning work with a new stage piece, a scale model of Antonoff's favorite haunt, his upstairs recording studio at Electric Lady Studios in New York. The “dollhouse-like replica,” as Swedish designer Tobias Rylander (the mind behind productions such as the critically acclaimed 2022 “At Their Very Best” world tour and Beyonce's 2023 Renaissance tour) describes it, is Antonoff's home base (where he is stopped). for over five years), where he has produced, mixed and mastered more than a few brilliant collaborations like Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, Saint Vincent Dad's homeand the 1975s Be funny in a foreign language (among countless others).

To bring the performance to life, Rylander, a long-time collaborator from 1975, and Matty Healy, who introduced him to Antonoff, worked closely with the band to bring to life their most intimate space on stage. “It’s rare that the production design process begins while the music is still being made,” Rylander explains. “But Jack (Antonoff) had this 'studio to stage' concept in mind from the start.” While much of the performance takes place on a standard stage setup – Antonoff in the middle, drums behind and other band members alongside the singer – a box appears on stage when it's time to start experimenting.

The space has every comfort Jack has to offer, from the travel glasses portraits to the tan three-seater sofa and mid-century modern coffee table. As fans of 1970s and vintage aesthetics, Antonoff and Rylander wanted to avoid the flashiness and modern bright lighting that has become commonplace at performances. Instead, Rylander opted to use old Fresnel lights and pantographs to create a true vintage feel. The lighting was Rylander's first and most ambitious idea. “The Fresnel light doors are actually automated and we choreographed their sequences in some songs,” he explains. “It’s a fun Easter egg for the attentive fans.”

And the set isn't just for decoration; It actually acts as a recording studio throughout the show. “During the performance at Madison Square Garden, the band will record tracks live and at the end of the concert, audience members will be able to receive the fully mixed tracks on their phones,” explains Rylander in the show’s press release.

Having typically worked from his home studio in his Brooklyn apartment, Antonoff is relatively new to the world of commercial studios, a transition the artist says has changed his life. He often expresses on Instagram how much this place means to him, saying, “Everything is possible here and I miss it when I'm away.” I spend my days and nights in this small space dreaming about how that music will come to the stage, and I spend my time on stage honoring what happened there, while also preserving a part of the show to bring back to that room with me.”
