Jerry Jones discusses Mike McCarthy's job status after the Cowboys' ugly loss

Jerry Jones' football team was served a big slice of humble pie on Sunday, the elderly owner's 82nd birthday, as the Cowboys were decimated by the Lions, 47-9.

Jones described the defeat – the worst home loss the Cowboys have suffered since Jones bought the franchise in 1989 – as “humiliating” and “very concerning” as the team now tries to figure out what to do next.

The Cowboys have struggled at home all season, but Sunday's loss was on another level.

“We have to take stock and we certainly have a break week, but there is nothing magical about a break week,” Jones said. “You can do some things differently within three days of some things that bit us out there today. This was very concerning and very humbling and I felt sorry for all of our great fans, especially those in the stadium and certainly those who care about the Cowboys.”

According to Ed Werder, Sunday's ugly defeat was the most points the Cowboys had ever given up in a game in which they didn't score a touchdown.

Dallas was held to just 53 yards on the ground.

“That was a shock. I thought we could do a lot of things better in this football game and I think we can,” Jones said. “We just didn’t do them today and don’t have a lot of answers. What are you going to do about it? We’re going to go to work.”

Jones looked unhappy as the game progressed as the Fox broadcast flashed into the owner's box at AT&T Stadium after Lions defenseman David Montgomery scored a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The Cowboys owner dismissed the idea that he was considering firing head coach Mike McCarthy.

“Oh, I haven’t even considered that, I don’t think so, so tell me clearly I haven’t considered that,” Jones said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you? OK? Now, I'm not going to hypothesize with you about what I view as a coaching change given the timing of where we're sitting here, I don't do that at all.”

Jones didn't want to place the blame on his head coach, adding that the players would agree that McCarthy didn't deserve all the blame.

The Cowboys will play two away games following their bye week.
