Kyle Shanahan: 'You don't get an apology' when the NFL makes an official mistake

Last night the NFL botched a Seahawks punt. The league admitted the mistake.

On Friday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if he had received an apology from the league office.

“No,” Shanahan told reporters. “You don’t get apologies, but apologies aren’t that big of a deal. Once it happens, you have to move on with your life. Apologies don't make it better. I’m just happy that everything worked out and I’ll just keep going.”

The transparency of the league is refreshing. It helps that the 49ers still won and covered the spread.

As the NFL explains, the key aspect is from Amazon Prime game production didn't arrive until after the replay it was determined that the ball had not touched Seahawks punt returner Dee Williams. It should have been San Francisco's ball because the angle, which appeared late, showed the ball touching Williams' finger.

Of course, it's easy for the league to admit the mistake if in the same breath it blames a broadcast partner for it. The deeper question is whether the league should rely on the network to televise the game — or whether the league should have its own set of cameras.

In Week 1, NBC found Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely's key shot toe clearly on the white line in the back of the end zone, negating (the two-point attempt) a game-winning touchdown in Kansas City on opening night. Had this game taken place on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm ET, fewer cameras would have been used by the network; That fact alone could have potentially changed the outcome of the game.

The league should have static cameras covering the field in every stadium. People like Bill Belichick have been advocating for this for years. The only obvious reason for not doing it is, frankly, an unwillingness to spend the money.

If the Seahawks had won last night's game – or if they had covered the spread – after missing the muff, there would be a lot of pressure for the NFL to take some of the money flowing into its coffers through gambling sponsorships and finally do that What she was supposed to do was done years ago.
