Lebron James and Bronny are the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game together

LeBron James' dream of sharing an NBA court with his son has officially been realized.

With 3:40 minutes left in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' season-opening game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, head coach JJ Redick added rookie guard Bronny James to the team's lineup alongside his father. It's the first time in NBA history that a father and son will play in the same game, let alone on the same team.

The James duo now find themselves in rare company in the long history of North American professional sports. There has only been one other high-profile situation in which a father and son played together on a major American sports team – Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. with the Seattle Mariners in the 1990 and 1991 MLB seasons.

And after Ken Griffey Jr. vowed over the summer to see his father in person if LeBron and Bronny James appeared on the court together in an NBA game, both Griffeys made good on that promise on Tuesday at Crypto.com Arena.

The only other high-profile case of a father and son competing together in North American professional sports occurred in NASCAR, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. began competing alongside his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., until his tragic death in 2001 .

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
