Lions Cardinals Game Updates: Live Scores, Highlights, Channel

play

The Detroit Lions are on the road for the first time this season to face the Arizona Cardinals, looking to avoid two consecutive losses for the first time in nearly two years.

The Lions (1-1) travel to the Cardinals (1-1) in Week 3 of the NFL season looking to rebound from a 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. This is the first meeting between the Lions and Cardinals since 2021, and both teams enter the season fresh off a home win over the Los Angeles Rams this season.

The Lions have not lost a consecutive game since October 2022. The main problems the Lions are trying to solve are the red zone offense and turnover issues. Now they face the challenge of defending dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray.

The Lions have completed two of two hits in the end zone after last week's frustrating red zone experience. On third down and goal, Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown on an underhinge route right at the goal line and regained the lead. Jake Bates missed the extra point, his first official miss in the NFL.

The Lions again put the ball in the Cardinals' face and completed a 13-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. Jahmyr Gibbs was the running back on the second possession and carried the ball nine times for 34 yards, including two key first-down conversions. Goff was perfect again, completing all four passes for 41 yards.

The Cardinals came back on the field with an impressive opening drive, capping it off with a touchdown pass to their first-round rookie. Harrison beat Carlton Davis and Brian Branch on a long crossing route for a 10-yard touchdown. Arizona managed 70 yards in eight plays and had just one third down attempt. Kyler Murray was 4 of 4 for 38 yards and also ran twice for another 34 yards to negate a holding penalty.

The Lions’ offense seems to have overcome the stress of the first two weeks.

Detroit received the opening kickoff, marched right down the field and scored on a 1-yard touchdown from Montgomery for the early lead. The Lions ran the ball six times, all by Montgomery, on the drive for 39 yards, including 17 yards on the first two plays to set the tone. Jared Goff completed all three of his attempts to the tight ends, one to Sam LaPorta and two to Brock Wright, for 31 yards.

Lions vs. Cardinals Pregame Notes

Last week, the Lions outgained the Buccaneers by nearly 250 yards, but scored just one touchdown on seven red zone trips and lost the turnover battle.

Red zone offense was a focus in practice this week, along with trying to slow down Murray and a Cardinals offense that has averaged 34.5 points through two games. Murray has been one of the league's best quarterbacks through the first two games and has a strong group of talented players around him in Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey McBride and James Conner. On offense, the Lions will look to get the running game going after opting to throw twice as many passes as runs in Week 2.

The biggest injury concern is Detroit linebacker and captain Alex Anzalone, who is out after leaving early last week and entering concussion protocol. The Lions are confident in their defense, which ranks in the top 10 after two games even if Anzalone can't play, because of the development of a strong defensive line led by Aidan Hutchinson and options in the back seven.

Lions vs. Cardinals Prediction, Tips

Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: The NFL is a very fickle league. Both the Lions and Cardinals started the year 1-1 with wins over the Rams, but Arizona's start has raised hopes in the desert while the Lions' has some people nervous in Detroit. The Lions haven't looked great in their first two games. Their offense has sputtered and Goff's turnovers have been a problem. But their defense has played like a top-10 team and their roster is too talented to stay down for long.

The Cardinals will be no pushover. They are well coached, they play hard and Murray is electric when he has the ball in his hands. But the Lions are the better, more physical team. I think they will win the battle for possession, control the trenches and come out on top. The selection: Lions 31, Cardinals 21.

Injury report Lions vs. Cardinals

The Lions had only two players, defensive backs Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Ifeatu Melifonwu, sit out before the trip to Arizona, while Anzalone (brain) sat out before the game. Terrion Arnold (illness), Graham Glasgow (shoulder) and Isaiah Williams (abdomen) were listed as eligible but are fit to play.

The Cardinals will be without right tackle Kelvin Beachum. The backup right tackle will play in place of Jonah Williams, who was placed on the injured list after Week 1. Jackson Barton or Charlie Heck, two players who were called up to the practice squad, are some options for Arizona to block Hutchinson.
