Lions RB limps away against Vikings

play

The Detroit Lions might have been able to avert a blow against their powerful backfield.

David Montgomery remained on the field at the end of the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings after being hit at the line of scrimmage by a group of Vikings defenders. It appeared one player landed on the lower half of his leg as he hit the ground. Montgomery limped off the field with help from the trainers after a stoppage in play, favoring his left leg, before a false start punted on fourth-and-1 with the Lions trailing 10-0.

The Lions announced that Montgomery's return is questionable due to a knee injury, and he was seen on the sideline on the stationary bike. A few possessions later, he returned to the game.

“While Jahmyr Gibbs was fighting for pay on the Lions' final touchdown, David Montgomery was giving his coaches the thumbs up,” Fox sideline reporter Pam Oliver said on the show.

Montgomery signed a two-year contract extension with the Lions on October 12.

THE GAME: Today's Lions vs. Vikings score, live updates, highlights

David Montgomery replaces the Lions

Montgomery was the team's leading rusher with 351 yards on 75 carries and six touchdowns in the first five games. Jahmyr Gibbs, who is just behind him with 348 yards, will likely handle the bulk of the backfield work with Montgomery out, with Craig Reynolds and rookie fourth-round pick Sione Vaki also on the active roster.

With Montgomery sidelined, Gibbs found space on the right side early in the second quarter and scored on a 45-yard shot (see live updates) to cut the deficit to 10-7.

The Lions could not escape the risk of injury to their best players.

Last Sunday, they lost Aidan Hutchinson to a broken leg after already losing season-ending edge rushers Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes.

On offense, Kevin Zeitler missed the Vikings game with a hip injury. His substitute Kayode Awosika was thwarted three times in the first quarter.
